Following a fantastic response to our call for nominations, we are delighted to share the details of the inspiring recipients who have been awarded the ILDS 2024 Certificate of Appreciation Awards.
These annual awards aim to recognise dermatologists and others in the field of dermatological care who have made an outstanding contribution in either International Leadership or Humanitarian Dermatology.
Humanitarian Dermatology
This category recognises those individuals that have been undertaking work in their own time in a selfless, humanitarian and not-for-profit manner to improve the skin health of people in under-served areas of the world.

Belen Lardizabal Dofitas, MD FPDS
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in Humanitarian Dermatology
"This Award brings great honor to me, my dermatology colleagues, and partners. It validates my work on skin health for the underserved and inspires me to persevere despite challenges. May other dermatologists follow this less travelled but more fulfilling path."
Dr. Belen Lardizabal Dofitas is a Fellow of the Philippine Dermatological Society and an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Manila. She has a PhD in public health and is a clinical epidemiologist and wound specialist. Since 2001, she has been a volunteer working board member of the Philippine Leprosy Mission and is currently its President. She devotes her career to Community Skin Health and Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases by caring for indigent patients in Philippine General Hospital, conducting outreach skin services, training, and research in underserved communities.

Professor MD Samiul Huq
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in Humanitarian Dermatology
"Receiving this award is inspiring. I feel my work is recognised and that more work needs to be done to improve the quality of life of patients."
Professor Samiul Huq is a 1980 medical graduate from Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh. He completed a diploma in Dermatological Science and a Master’s in Dermatology, from the college of medicine under the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK. He then obtained his master’s in Public Health from North South University. Professor Huq has many national and international publications. He is the founder and president of the psoriasis awareness club Bangladesh, affiliated with the International Federation of Psoriasis Association and SPIN network. Arianne Shadi Kourosh, MD MPH

" I am incredibly honored and humbled for this esteemed group of international leaders of the medical community to recognize my efforts to assist patients affected by trafficking and heartened that you have chosen to draw attention to the often untold plight of a marginalized group of patients desperately in need of our attention and advocacy. Thank you for helping to champion this cause."
Dr. Kourosh is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, founder of Harvard’s pro bono tattoo removal program for those escaping gangs and human trafficking to remove their branding tattoos, help them establish trust with the healthcare system, acquire jobs, and reintegrate into healthy circles of society. As Chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s task force on human trafficking and Co-Founder of IDAAT (The International Dermato-venereologist Alliance Against Trafficking), she has led the development of many resources and programs to help patients impacted by trafficking.

Dr Vivek Kumar

"I am extremely humbled on receiving this prestigious award and it is an honour that my work has been recognized by your esteemed organization. Such recognition inspires me to work for the impoverished society even at age."
Dr. Vivek Kumar, a practicing Dermatologist in Lucknow, India since 1985, started his charitable work in 1990. He has run free, uninterrupted, morning clinics for the last 33 years, 3 hours a day, 5-days a week, 40 weeks in a year. He has treated more than 250,000 patients, free of charge, providing free medicines with help from pharmaceutical companies. His pivotal work includes maintaining a 100 bedded Leprosy hospital where he is also known as “The Leprosy Man”. Recently he has also started a donation of Rs. 100 every day from his private practice for surgery of needy Vitiligo patients

Dr Mahesh Shah

"I am deeply grateful to the ILDS for giving me this prestigious Certificate of Appreciation Award 2024. Thank you for recognizing and acknowledging my hard work and dedication."
Dr Mahesh Shah is a Senior Consultant Dermatologist and Acting Medical Director at Anandaban Hospital, The Leprosy Mission Nepal. He has been taking care of leprosy patients for more than 3 decades and supporting the Anandaban Centre for various leprosy training programs as the Chief Facilitator of Leprosy training. In addition, Dr Shah has been actively involved in Drug Clinical Trials and several Mycobacterial research. He has also served in the Society of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists of Nepal (SODVELON) as a President. Furthermore, he received "Senior Researcher Award 2016" from NHRC.

Professor Shahidullah Sikder MD, FRCP
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in Humanitarian Dermatology
"It is great honor to me and made more responsible to continue the humanitarian work specially in the field of skin health for the underprivileged people of rural Bangladesh."
Professor Shahidullah Sikder is the pioneer of Arsenicosis and occupational dermatology in Bangladesh. He is the founder of the social healthcare centre, "Samajik Sastho Kendro”, where free and low-cost medical services have been provided for the last 35 years. He established “Afjalunnessa Sikdar Social Health Foundation" to provide healthcare services to the underprivileged people. He has been conducting a number of free skin health camps in remote areas of Bangladesh. As Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, he did tremendous job by introducing low-cost services

Rebecca Vasquez, MD

"Receiving this award highlights the importance of humanitarian work in dermatology and the impact of our dedication and care. I hope it inspires others in our field to embrace service and compassion, so we can advance dermatology and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve."
Rebecca Vasquez, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at UT Southwestern. She joined faculty in 2015, where she has also been serving as the Assistant Chief of Service of Dermatology at Parkland Hospital. She is the Faculty Sponsor for both the Agape Clinic (a student-run free clinic) and Future Doctor Pathway Program (a mentorship program for high school students). She is the Director for the Health Equity Building (HEB) committee for the Department of Dermatology. Her professional honors include the Outstanding Teacher Award and Parkland’s Physician of the Year.

International Leadership
This category aims to recognise those individuals that have made significant contributions to furthering international dermatology having demonstrated international leadership which has had an impact on global health policies and practices, furthering cross-border research, education and empowerment of dermatologists, their societies and the public.

Professor Masayuki Amagai
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in International Leadership
"Receiving this award is a profound honour. It recognises my dedication to advancing dermatology research and clinical care. It inspires me to strive for excellence and contribute to the scientific community."
Masayuki Amagai, M.D., Ph.D., has been Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Keio University School of Medicine since 2005 and Vice President for Research at Keio University since 2021. He served as Dean of Keio University School of Medicine (2017-2021) and is Team Leader at the Laboratory for Skin Homeostasis, RIKEN IMS. An International Member of the National Academy of Medicine USA, he has held leadership roles, including President of the Japanese Dermatological Association (2018-2024). His research focuses on autoimmune and allergic skin diseases and skin immunology.

Professor Tilo Biedermann MD
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in International Leadership
"Being engaged in the international dermatological community and guiding and mentoring the next generation next to high level patient care has been the most prestigious and rewarding experience of my professional life and receiving this award is the highest honour and motivation."
Tilo Biedermann completed his residency at the Department of Dermatology of the LMU, Munich, Germany. He was awarded a research fellowship by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for Vienna, Austria, where he received his habilitation. In 2004, he was appointed professor in Tübingen, Germany, and in 2014 professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology of the Technical University of Munich. He served as president of the European Society of Dermatological Research and the German Dermatological Society, is member of the DFG Expert Council and spokesperson of a DFG Research Training Group.

Professor Tania Ferreira Cestari

" This recognition is the crowning achievement of a long career. I am very happy with the nomination. However, the credit also belongs to many people who have participated in different projects. With them, colleagues and patients, I share this honor."
Tania Cestari is Professor of Dermatology at the University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She is especially dedicated to clinical research and young dermatologists training, having served in many national and international committees in charge of scholarships and mentoring programs. Her projects were crucial for child health assistance and access to treatments for undeserved populations. Dr. Cestari organized Pediatric Dermatology Clinics, operational for 35 years, and introduced Phototherapy in her state.

Professor Victor G. Prieto, MD, PhD

After a residency in Pathology and Dermatopathology with Dr. Scott McNutt, at Weil - Cornell NYH New York City and a Surgical Pathology fellowship at MSKCC with Dr. Juan Rosai, Dr. Prieto joined DUMC as Assistant Professor in 1996. In 1999, he joined MD Anderson Cancer Center. He was Fellowship Director of Dermatopathology 2015-2020, section chief of Dermatopathology 1999-2016, and Department Chair of Anatomic Pathology 2/2014 - 2/2024. Dr. Prieto has participated in the 8th edition of the AJCC classification of melanoma and is a contributor to the Blue Book of the WHO on cutaneous neoplasms

Prof Fahafahantsoa RAPELANORO RABENJA Certified in Dermatology at Bordeaux University, Head of Department of Dermatology, Antananarivo University Hospital. His research focus is Atopic dermatitis in SubSaharian Africa, Subcutaneous fungus (Chromoblastomycose, Sporotrichose) and Teledermatology, PASSION project (IA in AD). Professor Erwin Tschachler, M.D., ML, FACD
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in International Leadership
"The international community of dermatologists and skin researchers has been my spiritual "home" for four decades. I feel very humbled but also honoured receiving this prestigious Award from the ILDS."
Professor Erwin Tschachler received his MD in 1978 from the University of Vienna, Austria and did his dermatology training in the department of Klaus Wolff and conducted immunodermatological research in the laboratory of Georg Stingl. 1986-1989 he joined the laboratory of Robert Gallo at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, USA. In 1996, he was appointed Professor of Dermatology and directed a research division at the Department of Dermatology in Vienna. Concurrently, from 1996 to 2012, he directed a skin research laboratory in Neuilly, France. Since 2022, he is Editor in Chief of JID.

Iris Zalaudek
Recipient of the ILDS CoA 2024 in International Leadership
"Recognition, Appreciation, Gratitude, Proud, Exemplary, Direction, Possibility to Support"
Prof. Iris Zalaudek started her career at the Department of Dermatology and Venerology of the Medical University of Graz, Austria and became the first Female President of the International Dermoscopy Society (2016-2021). Since 2017 she is Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Venerology at the University of Trieste, Italy. In 2022 she obtained as first foreign woman in Italian Dermatology Academia the title of Full Professor at the University of Trieste. She has been listed among the most influential 50 women in dermatology in 2021 and as Top researcher at the University of Trieste
